Our first Big Charity Giveback was to St Leonard’s Hospice...
Read MoreThe Big Charity Giveback is a community project we set up in the first national lockdown back in March 2020. We understand just how important volunteers are to local charities. Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, volunteers have been there to support their organisations and communities and we believe it’s time we showed our appreciation. Throughout lockdown 1, we sent treats to charity volunteers (normally tea and chocolates) just as a small token of our appreciation. We also donated valuable resources to other local charities, such as a local food kitchen. One small act of kindness may not feel like a lot… but if we all come together they can mean so much to people.
How can I get involved?
It’s super simple! An easy way to support a local charity is through a donation. Look below for some local charities to donate to. Alternatively, look at sites such as JustGiving, but if you have a charity in mind, the best place to donate is on their website. If you want to send gifts like we did, we advise that you look for Amazon Wishlists or email ahead checking if it’s ok to send some gifts to them as some offices may be closed due to Coronavirus restrictions.
How did we do?
We’re glad you asked! Below is a little highlight of some of our Big Charity Givebacks. Have a read of the blog posts… there are some cute dog photos for Dogs Trust and the RSPCA.

Our fourth stop on our Big Charity Giveback was the York Kitchen for Everyone. Even during the Coronavirus outbreak, they are still cooking for the homeless guys that have been temporarily housed in a local hotel and they are also sending out food parcels and buying fresh fruit and veg that is distributed through the community food banks, as you can imagine there is a great deal of need at the moment.

Read MoreOur ninth stop on our Big Charity Giveback was the team at SASH.
SASH is a youth homelessness charity that works across York, North and East Yorkshire, helping young people aged 16-25 who are facing homelessness. They do not run a hostel or own any property. The accommodation they offer is through their Nightstop and Supported Lodgings services, which rely on volunteer ‘hosts’ who offer a spare room in their own home. Their services are as much about supporting young people to resolve the problems which have led to them becoming homeless as they are about putting a roof over their head. Part of this support is provided through their SASH Active programme.

We’re committed to making progress and addressing systemic inequality – and not just today, or this month.
As a first step: we’re donating to the Black Lives Matter campaign.
We hope you’ll join us in supporting their work to end racism, discrimination, and systemic violence.
While some might say that York Pi Jam should stick to the charitable work on digital making an e-safety, our team want to be clear:
We don’t think there should be anything inherently political about equality and basic human rights.
Why be quiet… when you have a voice.
